Digital Forensics

Digital forensics and evidence preservation

Understand custody, integrity and uncertainty before interpreting events.

Educational guidance only. This article is not legal advice, an audit conclusion or an authorization to test systems.

Confirm authority first

Evidence handling may involve legal, contractual and privacy obligations. Establish who can approve collection, which systems are included and how data may be retained and shared.

Document custody and integrity

Record sources, collection methods, times, handlers and transfers. Validated integrity checks help identify changes; a hash alone does not establish that collection was complete or lawful.

Build a careful timeline

Time zones, clock differences and missing logs can change interpretation. Separate observations, hypotheses and conclusions. A timeline supports investigation but does not prove attribution.
