Security Best Practices

Understanding your digital attack surface

A practical starting point for knowing what your organization exposes.

Educational guidance only. This article is not legal advice, an audit conclusion or an authorization to test systems.

Start with an asset inventory

List the websites, APIs, cloud accounts, devices and third-party services your organization depends on. Assign an owner to each asset and record which information it handles. An inventory is a living record, not a one-time checklist.

Review what is reachable

Consider public-facing applications, remote-access tools and exposed storage. Confirm whether each exposure is needed and whether its access controls match the business purpose. Only test systems with explicit permission.

Prioritize with context

A technical weakness matters differently depending on the data, access and business workflow involved. Combine technical severity with business impact before setting remediation priorities.

Keep the inventory current

Include security review in launches, vendor changes and account provisioning. Revisit ownership and exposure when teams or services change.
